LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The final round of the Brigham Young Cougar Classic was cancelled due to snow on Saturday, April 20, therefore the results from Friday's first two rounds will stand as the final results.
It was a very good day for the Wyoming Cowboy golf team on Friday. The Cowboys posted a 36-hole total of 583 to capture sixth place in the field of 15 collegiate golf teams. Wyoming was led by senior Mike Urbatchka, who fired rounds of 72 and 70 for a two-under par total of 142, placing him in a tie for ninth place.
In addition to Urbatchka, junior Kurt Kowaluk and sophomore Mike Mezei also finished the tournament in the Top 25 out of 81 competitors. Kowaluk shot 70 and 75 for a 145 total to place 23rd, and Mezei was just one stroke back at 146 (75-71) to tie for 24th.
Host BYU tied for first place with Colorado State and Nevada. All three teams posted seven-under par totals of 569. Fresno State placed fourth at 570, just one stroke back of the leaders. UTEP finished fifth at 577, and Wyoming was sixth at 583.
"We played solid golf throughout Friday's two rounds," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "I think it is a sign that we are becoming a better team when we don't play your best and yet you still are among the leaders. There were some good teams ahead of us, and we beat some good teams.
"Mike Urbatchka played really well. He had a chance to shoot a 69 in the second round, but missed a two-foot putt on the last hole to shoot 70. All-in-all it was a real solid effort by everyone on the team."
The weather on the first day of competition was in the 40s with breezy conditions. Saturday's final round was cancelled to the a spring snowstorm. The tournament was played at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The course measured6,902 yards and played to a par of 72.
Next up for the Wyoming Cowboys will be the Mountain West Conference Championships, April 29 - May 1 in Sunriver, Ore.
