Sophomore Drew McCullough fired a 67 (-5) to place third individually and lead the University of Wyoming men’s golf team on the first day of the 2016 Mountain West Championship on Friday.  The Cowboys combined for a 290 (+2) to sit eighth after the opening round, and are 15 shots back of first place Fresno State.

“It was clearly a bit of a slow start today,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “We didn’t play awful but we know we can play better than what our scores show. I will hope to get the most out of these guys the next two days. We understand that if we focus on tomorrow’s round, we will be right where we want to be. Drew (McCullough) did great today leading us. I hope a few more can do the same tomorrow.”

McCullough was one shot from tying Gabe Maier’s six-under for the best-individual round at the MW Championship for UW. Maier recorded the score as a senior in 2011. The Pokes recorded 11 birdies on the day, with McCullough leading the way with six.

Redshirt sophomore Arron Lickteig is tied for 33rd at 73 (+1), while junior Ryan Wallen is tied for 39th with a 74 (+2) after his two-birdie day. Senior Kamrin Allen had an opening-round 76 (+4) for UW and is tied for 47th place. Rounding out the lineup for the Pokes is Quintin Pope. The sophomore is tied with Allen and also shot a 76 (+4) for what was the first championship round of his career.

“For the most part we were able to hang in there and compete. Being only a few shots out, we can jump back into the upper half tomorrow,” Jensen added. “This group has worked hard and they know what to do.”

Fresno State has the team lead after the first round with 275 (-13). No. 22 San Diego State and No. 37 New Mexico are five shots back and tied for second place. Individually, Nevada’s Corey Eddings holds one-shot lead over Trevor Clayton of Fresno State. Eddings recorded a 65 (-7) on the day.

The action will continue Saturday morning from the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National. Live results will be available on
