LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 24, 2010) - On the final day of the BYU PING Cougar Classic, the University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team struggled and fell from eighth place to 12th place at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The tournament marked UW's final event before the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championship.
After shooting opening rounds of 294 (+6) and 292 (+4) on Friday, the Cowboys shot their highest round of the event on Saturday, a 13-over par 301. That gave the Pokes a three-round score of 887 (+23) and put them in 12th place in the 18-team field.
Individually Gabe Maier was the Cowboys' top finisher, claiming his 15th career and eighth top-25 finish of the season. Maier tied for 24th place after shooting a 75 (+3) during Saturday's third round. He finished with a three-round total of 216 (+1). Maier had hoped to finish in the top-10, as he was in ninth place following the first two rounds.
"From top to bottom, we just didn't perform today," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "After Friday we were in position for a good finish but we didn't close out the event the way we are capable of playing. We will get back to Laramie and work hard to prepare for conference over the next week and a half."
The Mountain West Conference cruised to a clean sweep of first, second and third place in the PING Cougar Classic team standings. Colorado State won the tournament with a three-round total of 850 (-14), BYU finished second (852, -12) and UNLV finished third (858, -6).
Nevada's Jared Becher claimed individual medalist honors by posting a three-round total of 206 (-10). Augusta State's Patrick Reed and Nevada's Scott Smith tied for second place with a total of 208 (-8).
The Riverside Country Club plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,142 yards in length.
The Cowboys will open the 2010 MWC Championship on May 6. The conference championship will run from May 6-8 in Tucson, Ariz.
