LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In their best tournament of the 1999 spring season, the Wyoming Cowboys captured third out of 17 teams at the Brigham Young University Cougar Classic on Saturday. Wyoming shot a five-under par round of 283 to move up two spots in the final round, passing Colorado State and UTEP. UW freshman Mike Urbatchka of Sheridan, Wyo., led the way for the Pokes with a final round 68 to finish in a tie for fourth place with Ralph Gemoets of UTEP at 214 -- two under par for the 54 holes. Sophomore David Hearn of Brantford, Ontario, also shot a final round 68 and tied for 17th at 220 -- four over for the three-rounds.
Host BYU won the team title with a 54-hole total of 855. New Mexico finished second at 859. Matt Peterson of Air Force won the individual title with a score of 209 -- only five shots ahead of Wyoming's Urbatchka.
"We had two guys really shoot outstanding rounds on Saturday," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Mike Urbatchka and David Hearn each shot 68 today. We were five under par as a team, and we beat some of the better teams in our conference -- Fresno State, San Diego State and CSU.
"This was a nice confidence boost for our team, knowing that we can go into the WAC Championships in 10 days and compete with the best teams in our league. We just have to continue to work hard like we have the last few weeks. With another good tournament at the WACs, we could still have a chance to qualify for the NCAA West Regional."
Wyoming's previous best during the spring season were two eighth-place finishes at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in early March and at the Southeastern Louisiana Invitational the final week of March. During the '98 fall season, UW won its own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate in September.
The BYU Cougar Classic was played on the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The course measured 7,001 yards and played to a par of 72. Wyomings final tournament of the 1999 season will be Monday-Wednesday, May 3-5 at the WAC Championships at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Monterey, Calif.
