SUNRIVER, Ore. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team had one of their most difficult team rounds of the season at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships on Friday, and will enter the final 18 holes in seventh place. UW carded a team score of 311 (+23) and is now a full 15 strokes behind Utah for sixth place of the eight conference schools.
"Today was disappointing," said Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen. "We need to play a good, solid round tomorrow and finish this tournament and the year on a good note. We want to represent ourselves and our school well tomorrow."
New Mexico retained their first day lead by shooting another team round of 285 (-3). The Lobos lead BYU by four strokes, despite the Cougars firing the day's best score of 282. UNLV is a distant third, seven strokes back of BYU.
Spencer Levin of New Mexico did not relinquish his individual lead, and recorded a score of 70 (-2) to stay atop the leader board. Levin's two-day total of 139 (-5), is just ahead of BYU's Nick Becker, 140 (-4).
Wyoming's best score of the day came from junior Eric Baily, whose round of 75 (+3), was seven strokes better than his first day score. Sophomore Jeff Franks is tied for 20th place, after a second round mark of 77 (+5).
UW freshman Dave Stewart was disqualified from today's round due to signing an incorrect scorecard. Stewart is still eligible to play the final round and count towards the team score.
Each team played five golfers and counted the top four scores.
Tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. (MT) for Saturday's final round, and the Cowboys will be paired with Air Force.
