Wyoming seniors Jake Hunter and DavidHearn find themselves in a tie for 16th place entering Wednesday's finalround of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship. TheCowboys shot a team score of 306 on Tuesday, improving by 11 strokes fromtheir opening round score of 317, and moved into a tie with UNLV for sixthplace at 623.
Hunter shot a six-over par round of 78 on Tuesday to go with anopening round score of 76 and will take a 154 total into the final 18-holeround on Wednesday. Hearn rebounded from an opening round 82 by firing aneven par round 72 on Tuesday to also post a 154 total after 36 holes.Wyoming's third senior, Kevin Kayden, also enjoyed an excellent round onTuesday, firing a four-over par 76. John Lepak of San Diego State and JesseHibler of Brigham Young are tied for the individual lead at three-over par147. UW's Hunter and Hearn are only seven strokes out of the lead with oneround to play.
New Mexico shot the low round of the day with a three-under parround of 285 on Tuesday to move from fifth place into a tie for first withBYU.
"Jake (Hunter) put another solid round on the board today," said UWhead golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Jake has been one of our most consistentplayers throughout his career. If he can put together another solid roundtomorrow, he can put a great finish on his college career. "David (Hearn) really did a nice job of battling back today after adisappointing round on Monday. He was one of only seven individuals todayto shoot par or better. "Our third senior, Kevin Kayden, also put up a very good round witha 76. "I know everyone on the team wants to put up a great score onWednesday to complete the regular season on an up note for our threeseniors. We can still have an opportunity to make a move on Utah. We justhave to maintain our focus in the less than ideal weather conditions."
Competitors were faced with 15-25 mile per hour winds andtemperatures in the low 50s throughout Tuesday's round. This season's MWC Men's Golf Championship is being played at theSunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The championship is being contested onthe Crosswater Course at the Sunriver Resort. Crosswater measures 7,193yards and plays to a par of 72.
The third and final round will be played on Wednesday, May 2. Thefinal round is scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m., Mountain time.
