Sunriver, Ore. - Wyoming sophomore Matthew Brunk closed out an outstanding tournament at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship on Saturday. Brunk shot a final round of one-over par 73 to finish with a four-under par total of 212 for 54 holes to tie for fourth place in the field of 40 golfers.

The Wyoming Cowboys concluded the championship in seventh place in the eight-team field with a three-round score of 21-over par 885.

New Mexico captured its first MWC men's golf championship. The Lobos were the only team to finish under par for the tournament, shooting nine-under par 855 for the tournament. UNM won by nine strokes over BYU and San Diego State -- the Cougars and Aztecs shot even-par 864 over the 54 holes. New Mexico led the tournament from wire-to-wire.

In the individual competition, Michael Letzig of New Mexico won a playoff over Martin Laird of Colorado State to capture the individual title. The two tied at six-under par 210 through 54 holes. Letzig won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. He started the day five shots back of Laird.

"Matthew (Brunk, a sophomore) had a great tournament," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "He shot a one-over par 73 on Saturday, and had two under-par rounds for the week.

"We played well for 16 holes of the final round, but the last two holes hurt us. Our youth and inexperience showed a little bit down the stretch. We had some young players really step up this week, and that will give us something to build on for the future.

"Jason Aichele shot a couple of nice rounds this week, and Eric Baily also had one of his best tournaments.

"Kurt (Kowaluk) played better in the final round. We'll find out next week whether he earns an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional."

The 2003 MWC Men's Golf Championship was played on the Crosswater Course at the Sunriver Golf Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The course measured 7,270 yards and played to a par of 72.

Kowaluk entered the 2003 MWC Championship ranked 14th in the MWC in stroke average. The senior from Lively, Ontario, is still under consideration for an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional that will be played in Seattle, Wash., on May 15-17.
