The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team completed the final day of the Mountain West Conference Championship on Saturday at Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Senior Gabe Maier finished the tournament in a tie for seventh place after shooting a final round 77 (+6) giving him a three-day total of 212 (-1). The Cowboys as a team finished ninth with a final team score of 885 (+33).
"We just did not play well today," Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. "Gabe was in position to win this tournament but he still played really well this weekend. Overall today was a rough day. It was really disappointing because we were in position to finish in the top five."
As a team, the Cowboys shot a final round 305 (+21) finishing them in ninth place for the championship. Maier who placed in a tie for seventh, shot a final round 77 (+6) which gave him a three-round total of 212 (-1). The next highest finisher for UW was Clinton Boutelle who shot a final round 74 (+3) giving him a three-day total of 216 (+3) which tied him for 17th place. Senior Phil Henzlik was UW's next highest finisher in 40th place after shooting a final round 78 (+7) giving him a three-day total of 229 (+16). Michael May shot a final round 80 (+9) which gave him a three day total of 232 (+19). May finished the tournament in 42nd place. Senior Zach Zaremba rounded out the Cowboys scoring shooting a five-over 76 in the third round. Zaremaba ended the tournament with a final score of 236 (+23) which gave him 43rd place.
The individual title at the 2011 MWC Championship took extra holes to decide. Three players including UNLV's Derek Ernst, Colorado State's Ryan Peterson and New Mexico's Travis Ross all finished the tournament with a three round total of 207 (-6), forcing a playoff between the three. It would take three holes to determine the winner when UNLV's Ernst birdied the final hole to claim the MWC Championship. Finishing in a tie for second were Peterson and Ross. Placing fourth was SDSU's Alex Kang with a three round total of 209 (-4). Tying for fifth place were TCU teammates Johan de Beer and Tom Hoge who shot a three round total of 210 (-3).
Taking home the team title at the 2011 MWC Championship was San Diego State who shot a team total of 847 (-5). Trailing SDSU was TCU in second (849, -3), UNLV in third (854, +2), Colorado State in fourth (856, +4), New Mexico in fifth (858, +6), BYU in sixth (860, +8), Utah in seventh (874, +22), Air Force in eighth (875, +23) and Wyoming in ninth 885 (+33).
With his seventh place finish Maier is the sixth Cowboy golfer to finish in the top-ten of the MWC Championship and the first since Henzlik in 2009, who finished seventh. This is Maier's third top-25 finish in as many MWC Championships. With his top-ten finish at the MWC Championship and his excellent 2010-11 season Maier will be awaiting a possible at large bid to an NCAA Regional Tournament.
