ERIE, Colo. -
University of Wyoming senior golfer Gabe Maier closed out his Cowboy career at the 2011 NCAA Golf Regional adding another top-25 finish to his already excellent career. Maier shot a final round 75 (+3) to finish him in a tie for 24th place with a three-round total score of 216 (E).
"Gabe really played well all weekend," Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. "I am really proud of the way he battled this weekend. To come within just a couple shots of making the NCAA Championship is awesome."
Maier began his final round of the NCAA Regional Golf Tournament in a tie for 11th place at one-under par. He teed off his final round at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday morning from the 10th tee box. He played an excellent front nine recording six pars, two birdies and one bogey. His play on the first nine of the final round put him in position to earn the top individual spot from the Colorado Regional. He began his final nine holes poised to become the Cowboys second NCAA Championship qualifier. Maier played an excellent second nine recording seven pars and two bogeys. Unfortunately for Maier, Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez birdied five of his last six holes to take a two shot lead as Maier stepped up to the tee of his final hole. Maier closed out his round with a triple bogey on number nine after attempting to make up the two shot difference between he and Gonzalez. Maier finished his round with a final score of 75 (+3) which gave him a three day total of 216 (E) and tied him for 24th place.
"On number nine, Gabe and I both knew that he had to go for it being two shots down," Jensen added. "Gabe has had an excellent career here at Wyoming. Overall I was really happy with how he played this weekend. He was in contention all weekend and I couldn't have asked for much better."
