LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming sophomore David Hearn shot a final round 72, and finished tied for 17th place out of 92 competitors following Saturday's final round at the 1999 NCAA West Regional Men's Golf Championship being played in Tucson, Ariz.
Hearn opened with a two-under par round of 70 on Thursday, shot a 77 on Friday and with his final round 72 he finishes with a three-day total of three-over par 219.
Hearn narrowly missed qualifying in one of two individual spots for the NCAA Championships, as Nevadas Justin Peters and USCs Jorge Corral each finished one stroke ahead of him to earn the berths. From the West Region, the top nine teams and top two individuals (that are not a member of one of the top nine teams) qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Hearn finished ten strokes back of the individual tournament champion, Jeff Quinney of Arizona State, who posted a seven-under par total of 209. Quinney finished with a three-stroke advantage over Michael Kirk of UNLV and Nigel Spence of Colorado State, who finished tied for second at 212.
Arizona State, led by Quinney, also claimed the team victory. The Sun Devils finished with a ten-under par total of 854, eight strokes better than second place finisher UNLV.
"David did a nice job today, shot even-par and put a solid round on the board," said Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "For him to finish where he did in a field of this stature is really a feather in his cap. It will help the program immensely knowing that we have players capable of competing in this caliber of tournament."
The West Regional was played at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort in Tucson, Ariz. The course measures 7,087 yards, and plays to a par of 72.
Hearn, from Brantford, Ontario, enjoyed an outstanding sophomore season. He led the Cowboys in stroke average at 72.7 strokes per round, and he recorded nine Top 25 finishes in 12 tournaments during the 1998-99 season. He placed seventh out of 80 golfers at the 1999 Western Athletic Conference Championships, leading up to the West Regional.
Hearn qualified as an individual for the NCAA West Regional, while the Wyoming Cowboys narrowly missed qualifying as a team.
Hearn is the first Wyoming golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regionals since Pat Fry was selected as an individual to the 1995 West Regional. The last time Wyoming qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a team was in 1992.
