LARAMIE, Wyo. -
It was an impressive first day of competition for the Wyoming Cowboy golf team on Monday as the Cowboys moved into a tie for sixth place out of 13 teams at the University of Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational.
Wyoming opened with a 36-hole total of 598 to tie with Northern Iowa and Nebraska-Kearney for sixth place. Oklahoma City University is in the lead at 576. The Cowboys were led by senior Kurt Kowaluk, who fired rounds of 71 and 73 for a two-over par total of 144 heading into Tuesday's final round. Kowaluk was joined by sophomore teammate Jonathan Shuss in the Top 12 out of 72 competitors. Shuss is tied for 12th with a four-over par total of 146.
Kowaluk trails tournament leader Andreas Rydholm of Oklahoma City University by only five strokes. Rydholm leads with a 36-hole total of 139, three-under par.
"We played a nice couple of rounds today," said second-year Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen. "Kurt (Kowaluk) and Jonathan (Shuss) both played very consistently. Eric Baily also shot a couple of solid rounds in his first college tournament after redshirting last season.
"Matthew (Brunk) played much better in the second round, shooting a 74, after starting out with an 81 in the morning.
"For the most part, I'm pleased with what I saw in our first tournament rounds of the season."
The Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational is being played at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. The course measures 6,762 yards and plays to a par of 71.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with a final 18-hole round.
