LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming senior Kurt Kowaluk fired a one-over par round 72 on Tuesday at the University of Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational. Kowaluk finished in a tie for fifth out of 72 golfers with a three-round total of 216. He was joined in the top 25 by teammate Jonathan Shuss. Shuss tied for 25th with a 54-hole total of 225.
As a team, the Cowboys placed 11th in the field of 13 teams with a team score of 910.
Oklahoma City University captured the team title with a final score of 872. Jeremy Lyons of Iowa State won the individual title, posting a two-under par total of 211. He won by one stroke over Andreas Rydholm of Oklahoma City and Kyle Vasel of Illinois State, who tied for second at 212. UW's Kowaluk finished only five strokes back of the leader with his three-over par total of 216. Kowaluk tied with Tyrone Van Aswegen of Oklahoma City and Chris Jamieson of Akron for fifth place.
"I'm really proud of the way Kurt (Kowaluk) competed this week," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "He really wants to have a great senior season, and he started it out right with his finish this week.
"This was a good tournament for us to begin the season. It was on a very difficult golf course against a good field of teams. We are a young team. This week we played with two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior. Mechanically, the guys hit the ball pretty well, but our inexperience showed in how we managed the golf course. We didn't play as intelligently as we could have -- that will come with more tournament experience.
"I'm glad we are able to get right back out on the golf course this weekend and compete in another tournament. The New Mexico tournament will feature an extremely strong field. It will be good to play that tournament with one tournament under our belt."
The Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational was played at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. The course measured 6,762 yards and played to a par of 71.
On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14, Wyoming will compete at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The tournament will feature two rounds on Friday and will conclude with a final round on Saturday. The tournament will be played on the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
