The University of Wyoming men's golf team began their 2004-05 season on Friday and finished eighth of 15 teams after two rounds of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite with a score of 594. The third and final round will be played Saturday.

UW sophomore Jeff Franks, competing as an individual, is leading the tournament after rounds of 68 and 70. Senior Dan Silva had two solid rounds and is tied for ninth.

"We have a better team this year and a chance to be very competitive," said head UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Today we had a tough first round and then improved in the afternoon. I'm proud of the kids and everyone played hard. It was my last second coaches' decision to play Jeff as an individual. He could have helped our team score, but I'm happy with the way he played. Tomorrow we will push for Jeff to win this tournament individually and I really think we can move up as a team."

Also competing for UW was Matthew Brunk with rounds of 78 and 72, Niel King scoring 73 and 79, Eric Baily shooting 79 and 75 and David Stewart with 75 and 79 in his first collegiate action. Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.

The Gene Miranda Falcon Invite is being played at the Eisenhower-Blue Course on the USAF Academy grounds. The Blue Course plays to a par of 71 and measures 7,239 yards.
