The University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team opened the 2010-11 season on Monday at the Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational. However it wasn't birdies, pars and bogeys that highlighted the day it was lightning, rain and a tornado warning.

The entire 12-team field finished one round of 18 holes, but still has the majority of two rounds remaining. The weather forced play to be suspended numerous times throughout the day.

Cowboy senior Gabe Maier weathered the storm as well as anyone. He posted the second best first-round score in the 72-man field, a two-under par 70. He is three strokes behind the leader of the tournament and is tied with two other golfers.

As a team, the Cowboys combined to shoot an opening-round score of 301 (+13). That puts them in eighth place.

The event is being played at the ArborLinks Golf Course, which measures 7,190 yards and plays to a par of 72.

The field hopes to finish the tournament on Tuesday, but the forecast doesn't look much better. If the weather cooperates, the field needs to finish at least 36 holes to make the event official.
