The Wyoming Cowboy golf team played the first two rounds of the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., finishing in a tie for eighth place of the 15-team field with a score of 593 (+33). Wyoming shot a first round 289 (+9) and finished the day with a 304 (+24) second round. Junior Brent Baylon led the Cowboys through the first two rounds finishing in a tie for 12th place with a score of 144 (+4) after shooting rounds of 71 (+1) and 73 (+3).
"I thought we played a very solid first round today," Wyoming Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We made some mistakes at the end of the second round that really hurt our team score. It was a tough finish to the day, but this team understands those mistakes and we are going to correct them before tomorrow's final round. This team is going in the right direction and we are very close to turning the corner."
Baylon led the Cowboy scoring in the first two rounds tying for 12th place of the 84-man field. True freshman Kamrin Allen finished the day tied for 30th place with a score of 147 (+7). Allen shot rounds of 73 (+3) and 74 (+4). Junior Eddie Stewart fired rounds of 72 (+2) and 77 (+7) to finish with a score of 149 (+9) and finished tied for 36th place. Junior Eric Parish and sophomore Jake Hedge both finished tied for 56th place with a score of 153 (+13). Both Parish and Hedge shot a first round 73 (+3) and a second round 80 (+10).
"I am proud of how Brent and Kamrin both played today," Jensen said.
Leading the team scoring is Nevada who shot a two-round score of 566 (+6). Wichita State finished second with a score of 571 (+11), Colorado State finished third with a score of 572 (+12), while Denver finished fourth with a score of 579 (+19). Weber State rounded out the top five with a two-round total of 581 (+21).
Individually, Nevada's Zak Griffiths leads event scoring with a three-under 137. In second, is Colorado State's Kory Harrell with a score of 139 (-1). Weber State's Jordan Herzog is in third place with an even-par score of 140. Four players in Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland, Drake's Devin Leland, Wichita State's Hunter Sparks and Mercer's John Gregory Joseph, tied for fourth place with a two-round total of 142 (+2).
The Ram Masters Invitational is being played at Fort Collins Country Club which is a par 70 and plays 7,121 yards.
The Cowboys will finish play at the Ram Masters Invite on Tuesday with one 18-hole round.
"We are going to go out and play hard tomorrow and see if we can make a run up the leaderboard," Jensen said.
