University of Wyoming seniorDavid Hearn fired a final round 67 on Tuesday and captured the 2000 ColoradoState University Ram Intercollegiate. Hearn entered Tuesday's final roundin a tie for fourth place, four strokes out of the lead.
The Wyoming Cowboys also enjoyed an outstanding tournament as ateam, finishing in sixth place in the 15-team field. Wyoming began thefinal round in 13th place. Their second day total of 286 was the third-bestround of the day and vaulted them past seven teams into sixth with a two-daytotal of 581. Wyoming's other four individuals all shot rounds in the 70son Tuesday to go with Hearn's 67. Redshirt sophomore Kurt Kowaluk fired anoutstanding one-over par round of 71. Senior Jake Hunter fired a 74, as didfreshman Mike Mezei, and senior Kevin Kayden posted a 78.
"All the guys played nice rounds of golf today" said UW men's golfcoach Roger Prenzlow. "We really hit some good shots today, and played witha lot of determination. We beat a lot of teams within our region which willhelp us later in the year when it comes time to select teams for postseasonplay.
"It was fun watching everyone on the team play today. David (Hearn)was really on his game today, and he now has a first and a second-placefinish in two of our first three tournaments of the fall season."
In addition to Hearn's individual title at the Ram Intercollegiate,he also placed second in Wyoming's own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate onSept. 9 and 10.
The Ram Intercollegiate was originally scheduled for 54 holes -- 36holes on Monday, Sept. 25 and 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 26, but due toinclement weather the tournament was shortened to a 36-hole event. Thefirst 18-hole round was played on Monday, with the final 18 holes played onTuesday. The site for the tournament was the Fort Collins Country Club inFort Collins, Colo. The course played to a par of 70 and measured 6,921yards.
Wyoming's next event will be the New Mexico State Invitational onOct. 6 and 7 in Las Cruces, N.M.
