LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team played consistent team golf on day one of the Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Kentucky, and is in eighth place of 19 teams with a score of 589. Not suprisingly, the University of Louisville leads their own tournament by 17 strokes with a score of 562. Wyoming is only ten strokes behind the second place team, Marquette, with 579.
Cowboy junior Eric Baily, Crofton, Neb., has the lowest total for UW after rounds of 72 and 73. Baily's plus one mark has him tied for 15th of 100 individuals. Senior Dan Silva is tied for 21st after shooting 73 and 73.
"This is a really good, first class tournament for us to attend," said head UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "It is a very high-quality field, a great course and a good experience and challenge for our team. These are all teams from the south and east that we never get to see. I want to continue playing in this type of tournament yearly.
"We played pretty solid today. Anytime you can shoot par as a team it has been a good round, and we shot only two over during this afternoon's round.
"This is a very even, balanced team so far this season and I'm pleased. We need to close out the tournament strong tomorrow and move up in the standings. It's wide open."
Sophomore Jeff Franks shot rounds of 77 and 73 and is tied for 52nd, while junior Niel King is tied for 72nd after scoring 77 and 76. Freshman David Stewart rebounded from a tough morning round of 86 to fire a team-low 71 in the afternoon.
Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.
The Cardinal Intercollegiate is being played at the University of Lousiville's Cardinal Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The Cardinal Club plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,001 yards.
Senior Matthew Brunk is still out with an injured wrist.
