Cowboys Finish 11th at the DU Ron Moore Invitational

Sept. 30, 2003

Wyoming Cowboy junior Matthew Brunk fired a final round of four-over par 76 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 19th place at the University of Denver Ron Moore Invitational. Brunk ended with a 54-hole score of 220 (+4). Wyoming shot a closing round of 300 as a team and finished at 904 for the tournament to place 11th in the 12-team field.

Brunk began the day in a tie for 11th place at even par, before shooting his second consecutive round of 76. Wyoming sophomore Niel King posted the best round for Wyoming on Tuesday as he shot a two-under par 70. King finished with a 12-over par total of 228 to tie for 44th with teammate Jason Aichele.

The team champion was Colorado State. CSU won by 10 strokes over Campbell University -- 850 to 860. Nolan Martin of Colorado State captured the individual title by three strokes over Chris Baryla of UTEP. Martin shot a 12-under par 204. Baryla finished at nine-under, 207.

"Matthew (Brunk) played solid today, after shooting a great opening round on Monday," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Niel King really finished up strong with a two-under par round of 70 on Tuesday. It was good to see a young player like that fight back and get better with each round of the tournament. Jason (Aichele) played consistently over the last two rounds, shooting 75 in each round, but he wasn't able to put up any real low scores.

"As a team, we didn't put together four strong scores in any one round. We have two tournaments left in the fall, both next week, so we will get right back into competition."

The Cowboys travel to Reno, Nev., for the Wolf Pack Invitational on Oct. 6-7, followed immediately with the final fall event at the Fresno State Golf Classic on Oct. 10-11 in Fresno, Calif.

The University of Denver Ron Moore Invitational was played at the Riverdale Dunes Golf Club in Brighton, Colo. The course measured 7,129 yards and played to a par of 72.
