LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys fired a final round of 11-over par 299 on Tuesday at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate in Brighton, Colo., to move up from 10th place to a tie for seventh with Campbell University. The Cowboys completed the 54-hole event with a total score of 891, 27-over par.
Wyoming was led by senior Kurt Kowaluk, who shot an even-par round of 72 on Tuesday, moving up nine spots to tie for 12th place with a three-round total of two-over par 218. Kowaluk entered the final round tied for 21st. His 12th-place finish marked the fourth consecutive tournament this fall that he has placed in the Top 15 individuals.
Sophomore Jonathan Shuss notched his second Top 25 finish of the fall season, placing 22nd in the field of 78 golfers at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate.
The host school for the tournament, the University of Denver, won the team title. DU won by 11 strokes over North Carolina-Wilmington -- 855 to 866. The individual crown was won by Derek Brown of UNC-Wilmington. Brown shot an eight-under par total of 208. He won by five strokes over Nathan Fritz of UTEP, who shot a 213.
"The guys played a nice round today," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "We made up some ground and really competed. Kurt (Kowaluk) continued his great fall season with another outstanding tournament. Jonathan Shuss stepped up with a solid round of 75, and Jason Aichele contributed with a strong three-over par round of 75, as well.
"I like the progress we've made during the fall. Our goal was to continue to improve as the fall season developed. Our three-round total of 891 is 19 strokes better than we've shot all fall. We just need to maintain this kind of improvement into our final fall tournament at Reno."
Two Cowboys competed as individuals at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate. Sophomore Dan Silva tied for 26th at 222, and redshirt freshman Eric Baily tied for 31st at 223.
The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate was played at the Riverdale Dunes Golf Course in Brighton, Colo. The course measured 7,067 yards and played to a par of 72.
The final fall tournament for the Cowboys will be Oct. 7-8 at the Nevada Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, Nev.
