Wyoming Cowboy Golfers Tie for Sixth at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowboys shot their best round of the tournament in Tuesday's final round at theUniversity of Nevada Wolf Pack Classic to finish in a tie for sixth out of 16 teams. Wyoming was led by senior Mike Urbatchka, who capturedeighth place in the field of 83 collegiate golfers.

UW improved in every round of the three round event played in Genoa, Nev. The Pokes final round of 289 on Tuesday was a one-strokeimprovement over their round of 290 shot on Monday afternoon. UW began the tournament on Monday morning with an opening round 295.The Pokes posted a final score of 874 -- 10-over par.

Urbatchka closed out the 54-hole tournament with a round of two-under par 70 on Tuesday. He shot rounds of 74 and 68 on Monday fora three-round total of 212, four-under par. Urbatchka tied for eighth place to record his second Top 10 tournament finish in the past twoweeks. Urbatchka placed ninth at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate in Denver on Oct. 2.

Joining Urbatchka in the Top 25 at Nevada was junior Kurt Kowaluk, who tied for 18th place with a 54-hole total of 217, one-over par.

"We had another nice round today, with a one-over par round (of 289)," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Mike (Urbatchka)and Kurt (Kowaluk) both stepped up with rounds of 70. All-in-all the guys had another good tournament. After the first round, everyone onthe team played very solid golf. A sixth-place finish in this field is a nice way to conclude the fall season.

"These past two tournaments, the guys really have played well. It's too bad we don't have another tournament or two to play this fall."

Erik Billinger of Denver won the individual medalist honors, with a 14-under par total of 202 for the 54-hole event. Billinger won a playoffagainst Sprague Kolp of Nevada to capture the individual crown. Host Nevada won the team title by one stroke over Denver. Nevada shot athree-round total of 842, 22-under par, to Denver's 843, 21-under par.

The tournament was played at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club in Genoa, Nev. The course measured 7,263 yards and played to a par of 72.

This was Wyoming's final tournament of the fall season. The Cowboys' 2002 spring season will begin at the University of Hawaii JohnBurns Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-22.
