LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming mens golf team placed thriteenth, in a field of 16 teams, at this weekends Fresno Lexus Golf Classic. The Cowboys were led by David Hearn, a sophomore from Brantford, Ontario, who shot a 222 total in three rounds to place in a tie for 23rd. As a team, Wyoming shot a 54-hole total of 908. After shooting a first round of 296, which was the fourth best in the tournament, the Cowboys shot consecutive rounds of 306.
The winning school was California, with a three-round total of 855. The individual champion was Ray Otis of Nevada, who totaled 213.
"The guys are making a lot of mistakes around the greens," said Roger Prenzlow, Wyoming head golf coach. "Were making bogeys where we shouldnt be. Weve got to clean that up for us to shoot the kind of numbers we need to shoot.
"All in all we had a nice effort today, we got off to a bad start, but we had some of the veterans pull it together and keep us from having a catastrophe. Before we go to Stanford weve got to really clean ourselves up around the greens and work hard on the five-footers and just getting up and down. If we do the simple things well be fine."
The Fresno Lexus Golf Classic was played at the Sunnysice Country Club in Fresno, Calif., on Oct. 16 and 17. The course played to a par of 72 and measured 6,787 yards.
Wyoming will return to action on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 in The Nelson Classic.
