LONG BEACH, Calif. -
Darkness prematurely ended the University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team's first day at the Long Beach State Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic on Thursday. The Cowboys finished only half of Thursday's scheduled second round and will play roughly 27 holes on Friday.
The tournament is being played at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif. The course measures 6,633 yards and plays to a par of 70.
The Del Walker Classic features a unique scoring system as each team plays with six players and scores the top five. The five scoring Cowboys put together a first round team score of 368 (+18). The Pokes played are playing much better through the second round and are currently only four over par. Unfortunately that still places the Cowboys in 15th.
"We had a tough first nine holes this morning but played much better through the rest of that round and the beginning of the second round," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We need to make up some ground, which we can do tomorrow as the field is rather close. It is an advantage for us to be able to play 27 holes tomorrow."
The Del Walker Intercollegiate will conclude tomorrow as part of the field will finish the second round and all 16 teams will play the third round. The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. (MT).
