Cowboy Golfers Tied For Fourth at the Stanford Nelson Classic

The Wyoming Cowboys fired anopening round 287, three-over par, on Friday and find themselves tied forfourth place in one of the elite college golf tournaments in the country --The Nelson Classic, hosted by Stanford University.

Wyoming is tied with archrival Colorado State for fourth place. TheCowboys are only three strokes back of North Carolina State and Washington,which are tied for second at 284. Duke leads the tournament with a 280 teamscore, only seven strokes ahead of Wyoming.

Cowboy senior David Hearn is one of five individuals tied for secondplace. Hearn shot a first-round score of 69, two-under par. Wyoming juniorMike Urbatchka is also in the Top 25, tied for 16th at even par 71.

"The guys really did a nice job on Friday," said UW men's golf coachRoger Prenzlow. "We really played well down the stretch. David (Hearn) andMike (Urbatchka) both had extremely nice rounds of golf. But they weren'tthe only ones who played well for us. Really, all five guys played well.Jake (Hunter) shot a two-over 73. Kurt (Kowaluk) shot a three-over round of74, and Mike (Mezei) had a 76.

"We just need to come out tomorrow, play relaxed, and see if we canmake a move on the leaders. We've had an excellent fall season thus far,winning two tournaments. If we can continue to play the next two days likewe did on Friday, we can really finish up this fall season on a positivenote."

Wyoming is coming off a win at the New Mexico State Invitational onOct. 7 in its most recent tournament prior to The Nelson. The Pokes alsowon their own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate to begin the fall season onSept. 10.

The Nelson is being played on the Stanford Golf Club course. Thecourse measures 6,786 yards and plays to a par of 71.

The tournament is a 54-hole event. The second round will be playedon Saturday, Oct. 28, with the final round to be played on Sunday, Oct. 29.
