The Wyoming Cowboys shot a finalround of 306 on Sunday at The Nelson Classic hosted by Stanford University,and finished 17th in the field of 19 teams.
Wyoming began the tournament strong on Friday, and was tied forfourth place after the first round. But the next two days UW wasn't able tomaintain its strong play, finishing 17th.
David Hearn was Wyoming's top finisher, tying for 40th place at10-over par 223. Hearn closed out the three-day event with a four-over parround of 75 on Sunday. He began the tournament on Friday with a two-underround of 69, followed by a second round 79, eight-over par. Mike Urbatchkafinished four strokes back of Hearn at 227, 14-over par, to tie for 60thplace.
"From about the halfway point of the second round on Saturdaythrough today, it seemed like we lost our confidence and started makingbogeys and double bogeys," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Webegan this tournament with a very strong round on Friday, but our confidenceseemed to fade as the tournament progressed, and we could never get it back.
"We had a nice fall season. We won two tournaments, and it lookedlike we were going to finish on a strong note this week. But golf has a wayof reminding you can't ever take anything for granted. We now are off untilearly February. We can go into the winter with a lot of positives to takeout of the fall, and we can learn from the mistakes we made in this finaltournament."
The Nelson was played on the Stanford Golf Club course. The coursemeasured 6,786 yards and played to a par of 71.
The tournament was a 54-hole event played on Friday-Sunday, Oct.27-29.
The Cowboys will return to action on Feb. 5 with a dual meet versusthe University of Denver in Denver, Colo. Wyoming's next tournament will beFeb. 12-13 at the Beau Rivage Collegiate Classic in Gulfport, Miss.
