PALM DESERT, Calif. -
The University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team opened the spring season at its sixth-annual Wyoming Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The Pokes, sitting in a tie for 17th with 298 (+10) after the first round were led by senior Brent Baylon, who shot a team best 70 (-2) on the afternoon.
“It is great to be back on the course, this is a great event with a great golf course and great competition,” Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. “It is a premium golf course and tournament. I thank Troon Golf and Cleveland Golf.”
Baylon ended the day four strokes back of the leader, Colorado’s Yannik Paul, as he is in 13th place. The Phoenix, Ariz., native finished strong birding two of the final four holes. His 70 (-2) was one stroke short of his career-best mark of 69 (-3) at the Ping Cougar Classic last spring and this past fall at the Battle of The Tetons.
“Brent had a very solid round and he is a very capable athlete,” added Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen. “The kids have just been working hard and progressing and it is great to get some rounds under us.”
Senior Eddie Stewart and sophomore Kamrin Allen are tied for 73rd place. The duo finished the afternoon turning in a score of 75 (+3). Senior Eric Parish finished the first round at 78 (+6), as he sits in a tie at 106th place. Junior Cameron Lindell rounded out the UW team turning in a 79 (+7).
Oregon is the leader after the first round of competition turning in a total of 272 (-16).
“Round two tomorrow is just another opportunity for us to get out there and play,” Jensen stated.
