LARAMIE, Wyo. -
After posting an individual tournament championship, two top-five team finishes and 10 individual top-25 showings during the fall season, the Wyoming Cowboy golf team will look to build on that success as they open the spring this Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz. The Cowboys will be competing in the University of Arizona's National Invitational Tournament on March 17 and 18.
"We have an experienced group of guys who are looking to play well in all six events that we play this spring," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "This spring, it is all about our team playing well and getting it done. We are looking for everyone to contribute and for a couple guys to step up and lead this team."
The Cowboys are looking to build off of a successful fall season as they begin their six-event spring schedule. The fall was highlighted by top-five finishes at both the Air Force Falcon Invitational (tie fourth/19 teams) and the UW Desert Intercollegiate (tie third/16 teams). In all, the Pokes played five fall events.
Individually, the Cowboys were paced by a pair of juniors in Gabe Maier and Zach Zaremba. Maier finished in the top-20 in four different tournaments, while Zaremba finished in the top-25 of four different events. Maier had the best tournament of the fall and won the UW Desert Intercollegiate, thus marking UW's first individual title since 2004.
The Cowboys enter this spring with the goal of reaching the NCAA Championship. The Cowboys were ranked between No. 60-90 in the nation at different times during the fall season. The top-75 teams in the nation qualify for nationals.
The NIT is played on the Catalina Course at The Omni Tucson National Golf Club, which is also the host course of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championship. The course measures 7,094 yards and plays to a par of 72.
The 14-team NIT field includes three top-25 teams in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll, No. 7 Texas, No. 17 TCU and No. 19 Texas Tech. Arizona, Colorado State and SMU are currently receiving votes in the top-25 poll. Other teams that will fill out the tournament field include Arizona "B", Baylor, California, New Mexico, Purdue, Tulsa, UTEP and Wyoming.
