The Wyoming Cowboy Golf Team is preparing to host the Cowboy Classic Tournament at the Talking Stick North Course in Scottsdale, Ariz., beginning Monday, April 5.

"This is a premium event with lots of good teams," Wyoming director of golf Joe Jensen said. "It is really cool for me to see guys on the (PGA) tour that have been at this tournament over the last few years. It just speaks to the level of competition we host here. This is a premium golf course and is always one of the better kept courses we play on. I am happy to be able to host this tournament and it couldn't be done without the help of our sponsors, Cleveland Golf/Srixon and Troon Golf. They have been with us since the beginning and are two of the best sponsors in the country."

The Cowboy's lineup for the classic will be led by seniors Gabe Maier, Zach Zaremba, Michael May and Phil Henzlik, while redshirt sophomore Clinton Boutelle will round out the UW five. Junior Casey Ruff will play as an individual for the Wyoming during the Classic.

"As a team, I want us to play really well," Jensen added. "We have been inconsistent over the last couple weeks, but there has been more good than bad. As a team I know we are capable of playing more consistent than we have been."

Maier has led the Cowboys so far this spring season with three top-15 finishes and also leads UW in scoring average of 72.28, which is ninth-best in the Mountain West Conference.

At the 2010 Cowboy Classic, Cal State-Northridge took home the team title with a three-round score of 841 (+1). Previous three-time champion UC-Davis will return to competition after missing the 2010 Classic. UC-Davis shot a tournament-best 825 (-15) in 2009 to take home their third consecutive Cowboy Classic title.

Gunner Wiebe of San Diego will return to the Cowboy Classic looking to defend his individual medalist award from 2010, when he shot a seven-under 203.

Talking Stick Golf Club's North Course measures 7,133 yards and plays to a par of 70. It has served as the host course for all eight Cowboy Classic events. It is located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community at 9989 East Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale. Talking Stick is a Troon Golf Property.

Talking Stick was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 1998. Since its opening, it has hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1998 and `99, and the USGA Sectional Qualifier in 1998, 2002 and 2005, among numerous other events.

This year's field features 20 teams, including five of the top-75 teams in the county. Attending the classic will be: Wyoming, Air Force, Arizona, No. 51 Baylor, Colorado, No. 73 Colorado State, No. 53 University of California-Davis, Gonzaga, Idaho, Kansas, Kansas State, Nevada, No. 37 Oregon State, San Francisco, UC-Santa Barbara, No. 22 San Diego, Santa Clara, Utah, Utah State and Wichita State.
