Wyoming Men's Golf to Host Fourth Annual Cowboy Classic, Presented by Cleveland Golf

April 6, 2006

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming men's golf team will host the fourth annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland Golf, on Monday and Tuesday, April 10-11 at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament will play 54 holes, 36 on the first day and 18 on day two.

"I'm excited for this year's Classic and the field we have assembled," said UW head coach Joe Jensen. "There is growing interest in this event throughout the college golf community and it continues to improve each year. We are in the second year of a wonderful partnership with Cleveland Golf and to be tied to a UW fundraising event only adds to the appeal of the weekend.

"It's unique that we host a home tournament in Arizona, but it's our home away from home and Talking Stick has been wonderful to us over the years. Our team really enjoys hosting this event.

"Our team will work hard as we head into our final three tournaments of the season. Beginning with the Cowboy Classic we need to put ourselves in position to get looked at for an NCAA Regional bid, one event at a time."

In just its fourth year, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic has grown from 11 to 21 teams. The tournament field for the 2006 Wyoming Cowboy Classic is listed below.

UTEP returns as the defending team champion, as well as four of the top seven individual finishers from last season. That group includes Wyoming senior Eric Baily who tied for second place in 2005. The Pokes finished in second place as a team last season, their best finish of the year.

This year's tournament will once again be played at the North Course at Talking Stick. For the fifth consecutive year the North Course has been named by Golfweek magazine as either the first or second ranked public course in the state of Arizona.

The Talking Stick Golf Club was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It is located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community at 9998 East Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale.

Talking Stick opened in January of 1998. Since its opening, it has hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1998 and `99, and the USGA Sectional Qualifier in 1998, 2002 and 2005 among numerous other events. The North Course has been the host course for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in April of the past four years.

Talking Stick will also serve as the site for a UW Athletics fundraising event on Saturday, April 8. The Cowboy Joe Club will be hosting the first event of their summer golf series, a scramble golf tournament which begins at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by a dinner and auction. All proceeds benefit UW student-athletes through scholarships given by the Cowboy Joe Club. Spots are still available for players in the CJC event.
