Laramie, Wyo. -

Athlete of the Week

Mike May

How long have you been playing golf competitively?
10 years

What is it about golf that made you want to play at the collegiate level?
Playing Division I golf is an outstanding privilege and opportunity to play against the best in the country. It's an honor playing with kids that could possibly be playing on the PGA Tour one day.

What is your favorite club?

Would you like to pursue a golf career after you are finished at UW?
Yes, I plan on playing professionally for at least a couple years after college.

What are some lessons you have learned in golf that can help you in real life scenarios?
Learning how to handle adversity, this occurs a lot in golf as well in life. Learning to be patient on the golf course will be beneficial in real life scenarios. I had the pleasure of having dinner with Arnold Palmer and I remember he explained how honesty and integrity were invaluable objects in life and in golf, so I try to keep that in mind.

What made you choose to be a Social Science major?
I chose social sciences because it enabled me to gain knowledge in a more broad sense, rather than just specializing in one discipline.

What have been your favorite memories on and off the course while here at UW?
I've had two hole-in-ones this year while on golf trips which were easily my best memories on the course. One was in a practice round in Albuquerque on a 230-yard hole. My second one came on a 168-yard hole on my last hole of our host tournament in Palm Desert. It was a nice way to end the competition. My favorite memory off the golf course was my freshman year when the team competed in a tournament in Hawaii. The whole experience of being there for the first time was memorable but watching Gabe Maier attempt to boogey board was particularly comical. He couldn't quite make it over the breakwater and kept getting slammed into the coral. I believe he walked out of there with nearly 50 cuts and not a single ride worth his time.

Do you have a routine you like to do before a shot?
Hit it before you have time to think about it.

What is your favorite course to play?
Jacoby National

What will you miss the most about UW?
The spring season I will miss the most probably. There is something about winds blowing 40 every day and random freak snowstorms that makes me never want to leave. It will be a sad day.

What is your dream course you would like to play? Why?
I've heard that Augusta National is nice place to play.

What other sports do you enjoy playing or watching?
I enjoy hunting, fishing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. I used to play hockey, football, and basketball in high school. I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan so I enjoy watching NFL mostly but I'll watch just about anything sports related.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I have a camera that I would like to use more often but haven't found enough time because of the weather and being busy with school and golf. But I enjoy watching television and socializing. I like playing golf leisurely with family and friends also.
