Cowboys Travel to the State of Oregon for the 2001 Mountain West ConferenceMen's Golf Championship:The 2001 Mountain West Conference Men's GolfChampionship tees off on Monday, April 30 at the Sunriver Resort inSunriver, Ore.

All eight MWC member universities sponsor men's golf teams. Theeight squads will compete in a 54-hole format, with one 18-hole round to beplayed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 30-May 2. Tee times for eachday are set for 11 a.m., Mountain time. The tournament will be played on the Crosswater Course at SunriverResort.

Wyoming will be led by three seniors David Hearn, Jake Hunter andKevin Kayden. Hearn placed eighth in last year's MWC Championship. Hearn shot aone-over par total of 217 for 54 holes, and advanced to the 2000 NCAA WestRegional. Hunter placed 22nd in last season's conference championship with aneight-over par total of 224. As of the most recent MWC leader board (April 22, 2001), two Cowboyswere ranked among the Top 25 individuals in the conference. David Hearn wastied for 12th with a 73.2 stroke average, and junior Mike Urbatchka was tiedfor 22nd at 74.3.

Four Mountain West schools were ranked among the Top 30 teams in thecountry as of the April 23, 2001, Golfweek collegiate golf rankings. NewMexico was ranked No. 12. UNLV held down the No. 21 spot. BYU was No. 24,and San Diego State was ranked No. 28. The Cowboys enter the 2001 MWC Championship coming off a strongshowing at the BYU Cougar Classic on April 20-21 in Provo, Utah. Wyomingfinished seventh out of 16 teams at BYU. Included among theteams UW defeated in the Cougar Classic were MWC opponents Utah and AirForce. The Cowboys also defeated NCAA District 7 foes Fresno State, UTEP,Nevada, Boise State, Weber State and Southern Utah. Wyoming's successagainst all District 7 teams throughout the season will be considered whenNCAA Tournament bids are announced at the conclusion of the 2001 season.

Scott Lander of UNLV, Michael Letzig of New Mexico and Wyoming'sHearn are the top returning finishers from last year's MWC Championship.Lander tied for fourth at the 2000 MWC Championship. Letzig finishedseventh, and Hearn placed in a tie for eighth. Lander and Hearn areseniors. Letzig is a sophomore. UNLV is the defending team champion.
