The University of Wyoming men's golf team open play at the Mountain West Championship on Friday on the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort in Tucson, Ariz. For the ninth consecutive year, the Catalina Course will be home to the MW Championship. The 54-hole event will be played over three days and conclude on Sunday.
Junior Kamrin Allen and sophomore Ryan Wallen are the only two Cowboys with experience at the MW Championship. Wallen finished tied for 18th place in 2014 with a tally of 218 (+5). He was the top finisher for the Pokes. Allen will be making his third appearance at the championship after finishing last year with a 220 (+7) and tied for 22nd place.
Allen showed his leadership for the team leading the Cowboys in stroke average this season with at 74.3 with four top-25 finishes. Wallen and freshman Drew McCullough follow in stroke average with a 74.7 and 74.8, respectively. Wallen and McCullough also have notched three top-25 finishes for the season. Freshman Glenn Workman is fourth on the team heads into the tournament with a stroke average of 75.3. Rounding out the lineup is redshirt freshman Arron Lickteig with a stroke average of 75.8.
Last season, New Mexico won for the second straight year with a mark of 846 (-6). San Diego State was second with a team total of 849 (-3) and UNLV took third with a carded score of 851 (-1).
The field includes three top-40 teams according to GolfStat Rankings. New Mexico leads the pack at No. 21, UNLV follows at No. 31 and San Diego State rounding it out at No. 32. New Mexico's Gavin Green and San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini tied for first at 209 (-4) last season.
The Cowboys will be paired in the first round with Boise State and Air Force. The championship will begin at 8 a.m. MT and Wyoming will be the final group to tee off at 10:30-11:10 a.m.
