Maier Becomes Third Cowboy Golfer Named All-MWC

May 10, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After an excellent 2010-11 season, Wyoming Cowboy Gabe Maier was honored as an All-Mountain West Conference golfer on Tuesday by the conference office.

"I am really proud of Gabe," Wyoming Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "For him to be part of an elite group of golfers who are all going to be competing in the postseason is awesome. This is another nice recognition he has earned and deserves."

Maier, a senior from Cody, Wyo., becomes the third Cowboy golfer to earn All-MWC joining Mike Urbatchka in 2002 and current PGA golfer David Hearn in 2001. He also becomes the tenth golfer in Wyoming history to be named all-conference. In the fall season, Maier played excellently placing in the top 15 a total of four times, while finishing in the top 20 of all five events. His highest finish in the fall came at the Air Force Falcon Invitational, where he tied for third, shooting a three-round total of 213 (-3). His success during the fall season carried into the spring of 2011 as he recorded three top-five finishes. He recorded five top-15 finishes in seven spring tournaments. His highest finish in the spring came at the Arizona National Invitational Tournament, where he placed third with a three-round score of 212 (-2). Maier also held the 36-hole lead at the MWC Championship where he finished in a tie for seventh (212, -1), which was the highest finish for a Cowboy since Phil Henzlik in 2009. He also tied the school record low round of 7-under twice this season at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (63) and the Denver Desert Shootout (65).

Maier will begin play at the NCAA Regional Tournament on Thursday, May 19 at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.
