Two members of the University of Wyoming men's golf team have advanced to the sectional qualifying round for this year's U.S. Open Golf Championship. UW juniors Niel King and Dan Silva each won their respective U.S. Open local qualifying events. King won the U.S. Open local qualifying event in Riverton, Wyo., on May 24. Silva tied for top honors at the local qualifier in Fort Collins, Colo., on May 17.
King, a native of Gillette, Wyo., fired a 73 at the Riverton Country Club to outdistance his closest competitor, which was former Cowboy golfer Mike Urbatchka of Sheridan, Wyo. Urbatchka is one of two alternates from the Riverton qualifying event. Urbatchka shot a 75.
Silva was one of five individuals to qualify from the Fort Collins local qualifier. Silva shot a 67 at Collindale Golf Club in Fort Collins on May 17. He tied James Love of Canada for top honors. Three other individuals fired rounds of 69 at Fort Collins to also qualify for the sectional qualifying round.
There were 107 local qualifying events held across the country from May 10 through May 24. Each local qualifying tournament consisted of one 18-hole round.
Both King and Silva will participate in the U.S. Open sectional qualifying event at Columbine Country Club in Littleton, Colo., on June 7. There will be 13 sectional qualifying tournaments across the country on June 7-8. Each sectional qualifying tournament will consist of 36 holes. Qualifiers from each sectional event will advance on to the U.S. Open, which will be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., on June 17-20.
