LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The 2010-11 college golf season is here and a veteran Wyoming Cowboy team will begin the year next Monday and Tuesday at the University of Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational. The invitational will be played at ArborLinks Golf Course in Nebraska City, Neb. on Sept. 13-14.
The Cowboys will look to a veteran core of players to lead the team this year. Their roster will feature three seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and a freshman. Those Cowboys have played a combined 162 events and have posted a combined 34 top-25 tournament finishes.
"We are going to benefit from a group of guys who have put in the hours and know what it takes to be successful," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We have three team goals--to finish in the top-50 of the country, to qualify for NCAA Regionals as a team and to have a team grade-point average of at least a 3.5. We are going to work hard to be successful and achieve our goals.
"We are looking forward to opening the season in Nebraska, as well as playing four tournaments over the next month. We are capable of doing some very good things this year and hopefully we can get things started on the right foot this coming week."
Wyoming's lineup for the season-opener will be led by senior Gabe Maier, who is the Cowboys' top returning player. Maier had a stellar junior season that concluded with an at-large invitation to NCAA Regionals. Maier finished the season with a stroke average of 71.83 and was a top-25 finisher in 10 of 12 tournaments. His season was highlighted by winning the 92-man UW Desert Intercollegiate last October.
The Fairway Club Invitational will feature three rounds of 18 holes. The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
