1998-99 Wyoming Men's Golf

Wyoming's David Hearn Ties for 17th at NCAA West Regional, Misses Qualifyingfor NCAA Championships by One Stroke: University of Wyoming sophomore DavidHearn shot a final round 72, and finished tied for 17th place out of 93competitors at the 1999 NCAA West Regional Men's Golf Championship played inTucson, Ariz., May 20-22.

Hearn opened with a two-under par round of 70 on Thursday, shot a 77on Friday and with his final round 72 he finished with a three-day total ofthree-over par 219.

Hearn narrowly missed qualifying in one of two individual spots forthe NCAA Championships, as Nevada's Justin Peters and USC's Jorge Corraleach finished one stroke ahead of him to earn the berths.From the West Region, the top nine teams and top two individuals (that arenot a member of one of the top nine teams) qualified for the NCAAChampionships.

Hearn finished ten strokes back of the individual tournamentchampion, Jeff Quinney of Arizona State, who posted a seven-under par totalof 209. Quinney finished with a three-stroke advantage over Michael Kirk ofUNLV and Nigel Spence of Colorado State, who finished tied for second at212.

Arizona State, led by Quinney, also claimed the team victory. TheSun Devils finished with a ten-under par total of 854, eight strokes betterthan second-place finisher UNLV.

"David did a nice job today, shot even-par and put a solid round onthe board," said Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "For him tofinish where he did in a field of this stature is really a feather in hiscap. It will help our program immensely knowing that we have playerscapable of competing in this caliber of tournament."

The West Regional was played at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resortin Tucson, Ariz. The course measured 7,087 yards, and played to a par of72.

Hearn led the Cowboys in stroke average at 72.7 strokes per round,and he recorded nine Top 25 finishes in 12 regular-season tournaments duringthe 1998-99 season. He placed seventh out of 80 golfers at the 1999 WesternAthletic Conference Championships, leading up to the West Regional.

Hearn is the first Wyoming golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regionalssince Pat Fry was selected as an individual to the 1995 West Regional. Thelast time Wyoming qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a team was in1992.
