Freshman Gabe Maier led the Cowboy golf team with a 15th place individual tie at the University of New Mexico/Tucker Invitational, Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque, N.M. In the team standings, the Cowboys finished in a 13th place tie.

UW shot a final round total of 306 (+18) on Saturday to close out the invitational with a three round total of 905 (+41). That total put the Pokes in a 13th place tie with conference rival BYU in the 17-team field.

"This is a spectacular tournament with some great teams and we competed with them. We right there to beat a few very quality opponents until the last few holes of today's round," said UW head coach Joe Jensen.

"Overall, this was a great learning experience for our guys. We were right there for some big wins but didn't quite capitalize down the stretch. However, our team and especially those four freshman will really benefit from this experience down the road," added Jensen.

Individually, the Cowboys were led by freshman Gabe Maier who finished in a tie for 14th place in the 90-man field. Maier, a Cody, Wyo. native, shot a one-over par 73 on Saturday to finish with a three round total of 220 (+4).

"I am really proud of Gabe. He played great, especially for a freshman," added Jensen. "I am pleased with his demeanor on the course. He is very confident and mature and that really showed this weekend."

Pepperdine won the overall team title with an even par three-round total of 864. San Diego State finished second (868, +4) and Colorado finished third (871, +7).

Individually, Pepperdine's Jesse Barnsley ran away with a first place finish. The senior finished with a 12-under par total of 204, eight strokes better than second place.

The event was played at the UNM Championship Course, which measures 7,350 yards and plays to a par of 72.

This was the 53rd year of the Tucker, one of the most prestigious college golf tournaments in the country. Held at the Championship Course every year since 1967, the Tucker is the second oldest collegiate tournament in the country, behind only the New England Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Brewster, Mass.
