LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team will take its home colors to the Southern Dunes Golf Club to host the inaugural Cowboy Southern Dunes Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Maricopa, Ariz. The tournament will be a 54-hole event, with two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday.
"Southern Dunes is a championship course," UW head coach Joe Jensen said. "I am excited for this event as we have some great competition on a terrific course. We will grow this inaugural event to be on this same national level as the other two spring events we host (Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. and the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.). The opportunity to partner with Southern Dunes and build a collegiate tournament right before they host PGA Tour Qualifying School every year will add to the event and it uniqueness."
The Cowboys will be led by junior Kamrin Allen and freshman Drew McCullough. Allen earned his fourth Top-25 finish after tying for 17th at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. McCullough became the first UW freshman to earn an individual title in a tournament when he earned his crown firing a 210 (E) at the Ram Masters Invitational on the Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo., on Sept. 16, 2014.
The Cowboys welcome eight teams to their inaugural tournament. The field includes UC Irvine, Nebraska, University of San Francisco, University of Idaho, University of Northern Colorado, UC Santa Barbara, Fort Lewis College and Arizona State University.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club is an award-winning 18-hole Troon Golf facility, designed by Brian Curley & Lee Schmidt with Fred Couples. The course is in premier condition for championship golf as the Cowboy Southern Dunes Invitational falls between an All-American Gateway Tour and WEB.com's Q-school State 1 event. Results and recaps will be available on GoWyo.com following each day of competition.
