The University of Wyoming wrestlingteam had a tough outing at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texason Saturday, Jan. 5, losing all three of its dual matches.
Four of the nation's top 25 ranked teams, Oklahoma State (No. 2),Oklahoma (No. 3), Nebraska (No. 16) and Wisconsin (No. 22) competed atthe Lone Star Duals, which is one of the nation's most prestigiousmeets.
The Cowboys fell to Brown University 26-15, lost to Harvard 36-6 andwere dropped by second-ranked Oklahoma State 41-0. The losses droppedthe Pokes' dual season record to 2-5.
"It was a tough weekend for us but we knew it would be going into it,"said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "The guys didn't wrestle bad and Ithought we showed glimpses of good things at times in all the matchesbut there just weren't enough of them."
During Session One the Cowboys fell to Brown 26-15, winning four ofthe eight matches wrestled. Senior Kelly McConville picked up his firstpin of the season over Anthony Marconi to get things rolling for thePokes at 133. Senior Mark Hamrick followed with a win at 141 by a scoreof 8-5. Redshirt freshmen Justin Salas and E.K. Waldhaus won the othertwo matches for Wyoming at 165 and 174 pounds 7-5 and 6-5 respectively.Junior heavyweight Brad Steele lost his first dual match of the seasonto 20th-ranked Bronson Lingamfelter.
Harvard was the Cowboys' next opponent during Session Three. TheCrimson jumped on the short-handed Pokes winning by a score of 36-6.McConville and Hamrick were the only two Wyoming wrestlers to win theirmatches with McConville winning 9-6 and Hamrick winning 11-4.
In the Cowboys' final match of the day they were overmatched by No. 2ranked Oklahoma State 41-0. Waldhaus and sophomore Kevin Kessner lostclose one point matches by scores of 5-4 and 2-1 respectively.In all three matches Wyoming forfeited the 157 and 197 pound weightclasses.
"It's hard to say what we got out of this tournament. Our youngerguys looked tough in some matches and made young-guy mistakes inothers. I was pleased with seniors Mark Hamrick and Kelly McConvillewho both stepped it up and won two of the three matches they wrestled.We just need to look at the positives of each individual from thistournament and build upon that." Suder said.
The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team will next compete in the VirginiaDuals in Hampton, Va., Jan. 11-12.
