The University of Wyoming wrestlingteam competed in one of the nation's most prestigious meets on Saturday,Jan. 6 -- the 2001 Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. Grand Prairieis located near the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, and hosted 16 of thenation's top collegiate wrestling programs, including five teams ranked inthe Top 20 of the NCAA national rankings.
The 16 collegiate programs competing were: Brown University, theUniversity of Central Oklahoma, Fresno State, ranked No. 16 in the nation,Harvard, Iowa State, ranked No. 2 in the nation, Missouri Baptist College,Nebraska, ranked No. 6 in the nation, Neosho Community College, NorthernIllinois University, the University of Northern Iowa, Northwestern,Oklahoma, ranked No. 7 in the nation, Stanford, the United States NavalAcademy, Wisconsin, ranked No. 20 in the nation, and Wyoming.
Wyoming competed against Oklahoma in Session One, Brown Universityin Session Three and Navy in Session Six.
In Session One, the Cowboys faced the No. 7 ranked Oklahoma Sooners.The Cowboys lost 7-37 against OU, but had two wrestlers win their respectivematches. Wyoming's Chad Plummer at 157 pounds recorded a major decisionover Tony Moore of Oklahoma by a score of 11-3. The other Cowboy to win was197-pounder Craig Rumsey, who decisioned Waymon May of OU 8-4.
Session Three saw the Pokes record a 30-18 victory over BrownUniversity. Wyoming recorded three falls against Brown. The three Cowboysrecording falls were Rumsey at 197, pinning Christopher Chaft at the 4:56mark of the match, Kelly McConville at 133 pounds, pinning Roy Cho at the1:24 mark, and Thad Trujillo at 141 pounds, pinning Clinton Frease at 2:03in the match.
Wyoming's match against Navy in Session Six was an extremely closeone, with the Cowboys winning 18-12. There were no falls in the match byeither team, and seven of the 10 individual matches were decided by threepoints or less. The most dominant win for the Cowboys came again from197-pounder Craig Rumsey, who won an 8-3 decision to be the only Cowboy togo undefeated in the Lone Star Duals.
"This format really gave us a lot of opportunity to gain experienceand compete against some of the top teams in the country," said UW headwrestling coach Steven Suder. "Overall, I was pleased with the effort ourteam put forth, and I believe this will make us a better team as we headinto the heart of our schedule."
In addition to the 16 college teams competing in the 2001 Lone StarDuals, 20 of the elite high-school programs from Louisiana, Oklahoma andTexas competed in the dual format. The college matches were held onSaturday, Jan. 6, while the high-school competition was held both Friday andSaturday, Jan. 5-6.
