LARAMIE, Wyo. -
A pair of bonus points victories by sophomores Archie Colgan and Bryce Meredith were not enough on Saturday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex as the University of Wyoming wrestling team fell to No. 12 Oklahoma 21-16. Senior Tanner Harms and junior Brandon Tribble also scored victories for the Cowboys. Wyoming falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12 facing off against their fourth-straight ranked opponent. The Sooners improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 against Big 12 foes.
"We just didn't go out there and take the fight to them," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We had matches where when the whistle blew we were retreating and we didn't take fight too them. We just aren't wrestling like warriors and we need show more fight."
After Oklahoma got off to a 9-0 lead in the dual with a decision and a pin the Cowboys earned their first victory of the night by Meredith. The 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds picked up a 10-1 major decision victory over Trae Blackwell. Meredith earned four takedowns in the match including two in the final period to earn the bonus point. He improves to 15-3 on the season picking up his third major decision. He has earned bonus points for UW in three of the five duals this season.
Oklahoma's Davion Jefferies downed junior Cole Mendenhall at 149 pounds to extend the Sooners' lead to 12-4. The lead for OU was cut to two points after Colgan's first pin of the season against Oklahoma's Brock Wingermuehle. Colgan earned his pin 4:19 into the match and it was a result of reversal off the choice. Colgan moves to 13-6 on the season and is now 8-1 against members of the Big 12 Conference.
The Sooners would take three straight decisions at 165 pounds, 174 pounds and 184 pounds. UW closed out the dual with a pair of decisions of their own. Tribble picked up a 3-1 decision against Brad Johnson. After a scoreless first period Tribble got on the board in the second stanza with an escape. After a quick escape by Johnson to open the third period Tribble earned a takedown at the 1:18 mark of the stanza and rode Johnson for the rest of the match to earn the win.
Harms picked up his 11th win of the season with a 2-0 decision over Michael Brown. After a scoreless opening period Harms got an escape point six seconds into the second stanza. He also earned a point for a riding time of 1:53 after a strong final period, as Harms moves to 5-1 against Big 12 wrestlers.
"It is frustrating because we are ready to see someone go out there and mix it up," Branch said. "We have to be Cowboy tough and we need to learn that and I thought we were very passive."
Wyoming returns to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. MT dual at Oregon State. The Pokes will also face Boise State on Sunday afternoon in Boise, Idaho.
