LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming wrestling team was in Arlington, Tex. today to compete in the Lone Star Duals. Wyoming was scheduled to dual with Virginia, Northern Iowa and Brown.
In the first dual of the day, the Cowboys lost to Virginia 22-17. Each team won five of the ten individual matches, but two pins by Virginia in the 125-pound and 165-pound weight classes proved to be the difference. Pokes who won included Chris Walker, Jeremy Sell, Steven Schenk, Craig Rumsey and Abe Boomer.
Wyoming faced Northern Iowa in the second dual of the day. The Cowboys notched victories in the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes, but that was it as they lost 30-10. Chris Bouchard defeated his opponent 11-3 at 125-pounds and Chris Walker earned a victory by forfeit at 133-pounds. Northern Iowa has five wrestlers nationally ranked. The only Cowboy ranked is senior Abe Boomer, who is #13 at heavyweight.
In the third and last dual of the day, Wyoming defeated Brown 24-15. Chris Bouchard and Matt Winninger both pinned their opponents and four other Cowboys won their matches as well.
With their two losses and one victory, Wyoming now has a dual record of 2-3-1 on the season. Other teams competing in the Lone Star Duals are Cal State-Bakersfield, Oregon State and Wisconsin.
The next action for the Cowboys will be Jan. 9 at the Great Plains Open in Lincoln, Neb.
