FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Wyoming wrestling program shook off a tough loss Friday night and got two dual wins Sunday, thanks to dominating performances from several wrestlers.
The Cowboys (6-4 overall, 0-0 WWC) took out Cal State Fullerton 41-6, winning nine of the 10 matches, and beat San Francisco State earlier in the day by a score of 33-9. Against the Titans, Wyoming scored five major decisions and had three pins. Cal State Fullerton's lone win of the day came at the heavyweight level when Kurt Klimek pinned UW's Joe O'Farrell at the 4:05 mark.
The two wins came on the heels of an 18-16 loss to Cal Poly on Friday night.
"We came out and did what we were supposed to do," Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. "We came out and put up some bonus points finally, with some pins and major decisions. That was good to see. When you're able to go out and start executing a little more ... We obviously had a lot more offense and aggressiveness."
Highlights of the dual versus Cal State Fullerton included a major decision from Michael Martinez at the 125-pound level, a pin from No. 20 Tyler Cox at the 6:38 mark and No. 6 Shane Onufer improving his record to 20-0 this year with a pin of Clayton Schulke at 1:38.
Wyoming was nearly as dominant against San Francisco State, winning eight of the 10 matches. Cox won by technical fall, 16-1, versus Brian Tharp, and Dallaserra, Onufer, Patrick Martinez and Helbig won by major decision. LeBlanc won by fall, and Michael Martinez and Smith won by decision.
Branch said he was impressed by the performances of wrestlers like Helbig, Patrick Martinez and Belleville, all of whom have struggled at times this season.
"There were a lot of good performances," he said. "It's nice for some of those kids to get some wins. Hopefully, it can help them turn the corner. We knew we should go in there and get two team wins, and I definitely felt like we were going to do that. We need those. We haven't had a lot of opportunities to feel good."
