CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Early bonus points by No. 23 Oregon State was too much for the Cowboy wrestlers to overcome in a 32-7 loss Saturday afternoon in Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers (5-4), who are the Cowboys' fifth-straight ranked opponent picked up bonus points in four of their eight wins on the afternoon. Sophomores Bryce Meredith and Archie Colgan picked up wins for the Pokes, as UW drops to 1-5 on the season.
"We had a lack of effort and will today," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We demand more out of our guys. I knew Oregon State would be a tough team, but they just wanted it more."
After Oregon State opened the dual by winning four-straight matches Meredith earned a major decision win over Jared Reis by a tally of 12-4 at 141 pounds. Meredith came out aggressive with three takedowns in the opening frame to take a 6-2 lead. He added two more takedowns and added a point for riding time for his fourth major decision of the season. He moves to 5-1 in duals adding bonus points in four of those wins.
Colgan earned the Pokes second victory of the afternoon with a 3-2 overtime decision over Abraham Rodriquez at 157 pounds. Each wrestler earned points in regulation with escapes to force overtime. In the second tie break Rodriquez earned an early escape, but Colgan earned a takedown as time expired to take the decision. Colgan moves to 5-1 in duals with season and has won four-straight dual matches.
The early string of victories by the Beavers featured four ranked wrestlers. At 197 pounds, No. 18 Cody Crawford open the dual with a pin of the Pokes' Brandon Tribble. In a match of ranked wrestlers in the next two matches, the Beavers' No. 10 Amarveer Dhesi (285 pounds) defeated No. 18 Tanner Harms by decision and No. 6 Ronnie Bresser (125 pounds) defeated No. 15 Drew Templeman by major decision. Wyoming true freshman Drake Foster made his dual debut at 133 pounds falling by major decision to No. 19 Joey Palmer.
