Wyoming Wrestlers Defeat Marquette, Fall To Northern Iowa

The University of Wyomingwrestling team competed in a pair of duals Saturday, defeating Marquette50-0 and losing to Northern Iowa 30-6.

Against Marquette the Cowboys earned team points in all ten of theweight classes. Wyoming had three pins, one technical fall and threeforfeits in the victory. Mark Hamrick, Steven Schenk and Craig Rumseyall pinned their opponents. Hamrick pinned Andy Zychowicz at the 2:45mark to give Wyoming a 20-0 lead after four matches. Schenk pinned MikeKratz and Rumsey pinned George Flanek at 6:00 in a dominatingperformance by UW. Freshman Reynold Candelaria won by technical fall19-5 over Paul Bugenhagen in his first varsity action of the year. ThadTrujillo, Chad Plummer and Kevin Kessner all won their matches bydecision.

Wyoming won two individual matches against #19 Northern Iowa. At 133pounds junior Kelly McConville scored an upset when he defeated #17 ChadBoudreaux 3-0. With his win, McConville pulled the Pokes to withinthree points at 6-3 after two matches. At 149 pounds Mark Hamrick wonhis match over Keith Weber 7-3, again pulling Wyoming to within threepoints (9-6). But the Cowboys didn't win any more matches as thePanthers pulled away to win 30-6.

The matches took place in West Gym at Cedar Falls, Iowa before a crowdof 721. With the win and the loss Wyoming now has an overall record of4-4. The next dual for Wyoming will be Jan. 26 in Laramie against CalState-Fullerton at 7:00 p.m.
