The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team entered tonight's match with one goal in mind, get a big win and get the conference season rolling. The Cowboys did just that defeating the North Dakota State University Bison 20-16 and earning their first Western Wrestling Conference victory. The Cowboys improve to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the WWC while the Bison fall to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the WWC.

"It's a lot more fun in the locker room tonight after a win," UW head coach Steven Suder said. "I'm proud of the way the guys fought tonight."

Wyoming won six of the ten matches including two major decisions by junior Carter Downing and senior Sam Wendland. Downing defeated Ryan Adams 10-1 to get the major decision and improve to 27-7 overall and 2-0 in the WWC. Wendland had not wrestled since November 18 of 2006 because of a knee injury, but came back in mid-season form defeating Jacob Bryce 10-2 to get the Pokes second major decision of the night.

"I stayed conservative and tried to not make any mistakes," Wendland said. "I wrestled the way I always do, I try and beat the guy up, then break him in the third period." Wendland improved his overall record to 8-3 and 1-0 in WWC action.

Redshirt sophomore Garrett Desmond earned his second WWC victory and improved to 9-11 overall (2-0 in WWC) defeating Gabe Mooney 3-2. "It comes down to the guy who makes the smart move at the end," Desmond said. "I had a key takedown towards the end, and just stayed solid for the entire match."

Wyoming's other three victories on the night came from redshirt freshman Nick Ramirez (16-14 overall, 2-0 in WWC), redshirt freshman Cory VomBaur (14-12 overall, 1-1 in WWC), and junior Bryan Bernal (17-15 overall, 1-1 in WWC). Wyoming also received a strong wrestling performance by sophomore Dan Barrone after wrestling up a weight for the second consecutive week.

"This feels really good," Suder continued. "We have a lot of guys fighting hard and I think it showed tonight. We have made some adjustments and we're making progress."

The Cowboys return to the mat Friday February 2, as they head to Orange County to take on the Titans of Cal State Fullerton. Saturday, February 3, the Cowboys head to Utah for their third WWC dual against Utah Valley State. Friday's match begins at 8 p.m. (Mtn.) and Saturday's begins at 5 p.m.
