Pokes Come Up Short Against Bison

Jan. 28, 2006

FARGO, N.D. -

The University of Wyoming wrestling team completed their weekend road trip with a tough 18-15 loss to North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday afternoon. Both teams took five matches with a lone pin in the 133 pound match determining the difference in the final score.

The Cowboys came out with a fast start when they took four of the first five matches. Senior Bryce Leonhardt, returning in his first match since December 3, started off the Pokes with a victory in the 125 pound match when he defeated Mike Meger in a 10-4 decision. NDSU's Eric Sanders got the Bison on the board when he pinned redshirt freshman Cody Grant at the 1:37 mark.

Cowboy freshman Shay Lawrence would get the Cowboys back on track when he earned a 5-0 decision over David Cunningham in the 141 pound match. Sophomores Carter Downing and Danny Clum then kept it going with back-to-back victories at 149 and 157 pounds. Downing came back from a tough loss on Friday night to beat Gabe Mooney 11-6. Clum finished his road trip 2-0 when he pulled out a 7-4 victory over Andrew Quittschreiber. After this weekend, Clum has improved his record to 9-1 with his only loss coming by injury default.

As opposed to the start for the Cowboys, the Bison would finish the dual taking four of the five final matches. Junior Gary Dack fell to Zach Molitor 6-1, while redshirt freshman Dan Barrone lost to Matt Herman in a 8-4 decision. NDSU's Matt Wetterling's early 6-1 lead against redshirt freshman Preston Pavich proved to be a good enough start, as Pavich's late surge came up short with a 12-8 loss. Senior Malcolm Havens also had a tough match when he faced Jacob Bryce. Bryce scored the first points and never looked back as he defeated Havens 8-3. After the Bryce victory, the Pokes would need a pin by senior Dusty Hoffschneider in the heavyweight match. Hoffschneider was unable to pin Mike Maresh, but still pulled out the 11-6 decision.

The Pokes will return to action next weekend when they travel to Charleston, Ill. for duals against Eastern Illinois and Northern Iowa, on February 4.
