BROOKINGS, S.D. -
The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team dropped a 22-15 decision to South Dakota State on Friday Evening in Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. The Pokes were dealt a blow early in the dual with an injury default at 125 pounds and lost three matches by one point with two of those wins for SDSU coming on riding time. The Cowboys fall to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 with the Jackrabbits moving to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 action.
"I was disappointed in our start tonight and we didn't go out and finish in those matches and that hurt our team," UW head coach Mark Branch said. ""We have to go out there and find a way to get our hands raised and wrestle with inspiration. It was hard giving up six points at 125 pounds, but we are hopeful Drew (Templeman) will be ready to go on Sunday."
Senior Tanner Harms got the Pokes on the board after a trio of losses to open up the dual with senior Jace Jensen (174 pounds), junior Benjamin Stroh (184 pounds) and Brandon Tribble (197 pounds) dropping their matches. Harms earned a 13-0 major decision win over Alex Macki to cut the Jackrabbit lead to 10-4. Harms was dominate in the bout with over five minutes of riding time. In his last three matches he has recorded over 14 minutes of riding time. He used a takedown and four-point nearfall in the second period to secure the win.
"I was proud of the way Tanner (Harms) wrestled and he was very dominate and very offensive against a guy who has wrestled some top guys competitively this season," Branch said.
After an injury default at 125 pounds extended South Dakota State's lead to 16-4, freshman Drake Foster responded with a 9-4 decision over Brance Simms. Foster opened the match with a takedown and four-point nearfall on his way to his third-straight dual win.
"Drake (Foster) showed a lot of maturity and really gave our team a spark tonight," Branch said.
Sophomore Bryce Meredith followed Foster's lead with a decision victory of his own with a 6-4 win over Seth Gross to make the dual 16-10 in favor of SDSU. Meredith wasted little time striking first with a takedown in the opening seconds of the match. He also added a takedown later in the first period and withstood a late push by Gross to take the match and improve to 19-3 overall and 8-1 in duals.
The Pokes would drop the next two matches by decision with both junior Cole Mendenhall (141 pounds) and Archie Colgan (157 pounds) falling by only one point as the Jackrabbits extended their lead to 22-10. Sophomore Chaz Polson closed out the dual with his eighth technical fall of the season defeating Logan Peterson 16-0 in 2:55. Polson recorded four four-point nearfalls in the match.
The Cowboys return to action on Sunday at noon for a conference dual at North Dakota State in Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse in Fargo, N.D.
