LARAMIE, Wyo. -
It had been over two months since the University of Wyoming wrestlers had competed in Laramie, and some home mat-time was long overdue when the South Dakota State Jackrabbits came to town on Friday night. The UW home crowd was treated to some aggressive individual performances as the Cowboys soundly defeated the Jacks in their first Western Wrestling Conference dual of the season, 38-7.
Wyoming now has a season dual record of 8-2, 1-0 in the WWC. South Dakota State is 7-7-1, and 0-2 in the WWC.
Seven of nine `Pokes won their match-ups, five of those with bonus points, and UW received a forfeit at the 133-pound weight class. Wyoming's victories included wins by fall from senior Eric Coxbill at 157 pounds and redshirt freshman Joe LeBlanc (184), technical falls from junior Alex Rieder (165) and redshirt freshman Michael Martinez (125), as well as a major decision from redshirt freshman Chase Smith (149).
"Tonight was a mix of good and bad wrestling from our team," said Wyoming first-year head coach Mark Branch. "As a team we were somewhat inconsistent. Some of our guys came out fired up and were aggressive right away. Eric Coxbill really got that started when he recorded a takedown six seconds into the match. Some of our other guys came out flat, which was really disappointing to see.
"This is a time in the season where we need to be climbing, making gains and building confidence. Some did and some didn't build confidence tonight. We definitely don't want to be taking steps back right now. I want them shooting to get to that elite level.
"It was good to be back on our home mat. It's been a long time and it is nice to get back into the public eye and get people excited about Wyoming Wrestling."
After the forfeit by SDSU at 133, UW sophomore Cole Dallaserra earned a wire-to-wire decision at 141 pounds by a score of 9-2 and bumped his season mark to 16-10. Smith (21-15) then beat his Jackrabbit opponent by major decision, 10-1 at 149 pounds, followed by Coxbill's first-period pin at 157 pounds. Coxbill (17-10) took SDSU's Marc Wermersen down just six seconds into the match, then added a three-point nearfall before getting the fall at 1:51. That gave UW a 19-0 team lead after just four matches.
Wyoming's Rieder then completely dominated at 165 pounds with a 19-0 technical fall over Weston Ginther, extending the team margin to 24-0. Rieder scored four nearfalls during the match and now has a season record of 24-12.
No. 19-ranked Shane Onufer had one of the tougher Cowboy match-ups of the night at 174 pounds, but still recorded an 8-5 win over Scott Elliott, who had a 23-4 record coming into the match. Onufer is now 32-8 this season.
The Cowboys' highest ranked wrestler, No. 7 LeBlanc, made short work of Zach Blindert, pinning him at 1:38. LeBlanc had already recorded two takedowns and a nearfall prior to the first period pin. The win gave UW a 33-0 team lead. LeBlanc moved his record to 31-5.
Cowboy senior Mikel Hoopes (197) and freshman Jacob Scharbrough (Hwt.) each lost their bouts, bringing the team score to 33-7. Hoopes lost 10-2 to No. 16 Tyler Sorenson, while Scharbrough fell 3-0 to Jason Stripling.
Martinez gave the `Pokes their final margin of victory when he earned an impressive 17-1 technical fall win over Alan Marvin. He is now 28-7 this season.
A crowd of 470 fans took in the action in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Wyoming will continue to wrestle for the home crowd tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 31, when UW hosts the North Dakota State Bison in a WWC dual. The match will begin at 7 p.m. NDSU defeated Air Force tonight in Colorado Springs, 23-17. The Bison now have a dual record of 3-7-1, 1-1 in the WWC.
