The Cowboy grapplers earned their first conference victory of the season Saturday night with a big road win against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 26-16 at Frost Arena in Brookings. Wyoming improves to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the WWC while SDSU falls to 1-7 on the year and 0-4 in the WWC.

"It was extremely important for us to get our first conference win tonight and I am proud of the way our guys wrestled," UW head coach Steven Suder said. "We need to carry this momentum into our next match."

Wyoming got off to a rough start losing their first two matches, but came storming back after receiving two forfeit wins at the heavyweight and 125 pound divisions, followed by four straight decisions.

Senior Carter Downing began the rally by defeating Marc Wermersen by technical fall 17-0. Downing, 15-4 and 1-0 in the WWC, scored on five 3-point near falls and one takedown in the first period to give the Cowboys the 17-16 advantage.

Redshirt freshman Cole Dallaserra wrestled up a weight and defeated Weston Blasius scoring a takedown in the second and third periods and earning riding time for the 5-1 win.

Eric Coxbill, a junior from Wright, Wyo., continued his winning ways, defeating Ryan Meyer 3-1. The score was knotted at 1-1 headed into the third period and Coxbill scored a takedown with nine seconds left to steal the victory. Coxbill, with his second straight WWC victory, is now 2-1 in conference matches and 19-10 overall.

Senior Kyle Morrow finished the Cowboy run by defeating Justin Retallica 6-2 with two takedowns in the final match of the night to give the Cowboys the 26-16 victory.

"We moved some things around a bit because we felt it was so important to get a win tonight," Suder continued. "It's a battle every time you go out on the mat, especially in our conference and our guys have continued to fight all season. We took some risks in order to get the job done and it paid off."

The Cowboys will return to the Gem City next week to face conference foe Utah Valley State Saturday, Feb., 9. Action will begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the UniWyo Sports Complex.

"Utah Valley is a team that is wrestling with nothing to lose and everything to gain," stated Suder. "We will have to get a couple more guys in our lineup and continue to work hard all week for Saturday's conference match."
