Laramie, Wyo., (February 8, 2003) -- The University of Wyoming wrestlingteam won one of two duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday. The Pokesdefeated Eastern Illinois 38-6 but suffered its fifth loss of the season toNo. 14 Norther Iowa 22-13.
Against the No. 14 ranked Panthers the Cowboys only managed to score 13team points as UNI won six of ten matches. The Cowboys took an early lead asfreshman Bryce Leonhardt won his match at 125 pounds defeating ChrisHelegeson 10-3. The Pokes were defeated in the 133, 141 and 149 poundmatches before 157 pounder Andrew Shuler won his match with a 5-4 decisionover Chris Bitetto. Junior Levi Prevost, ranked No. 16, proved he is one ofthe best wrestlers in the country by defeating Drew Kelly, ranked No. 11,8-5 in the 165 pound bout. The Panthers defeated the Pokes in the next threematches but senior Brad Stelle helped make the score close winning the lastmatch of the dual by major decision, 16-4 over Michael Shedek.
The Cowboys came back in their second dual of the day by pounding EasternIllinois 38-6. The Pokes won nine of ten matches against Eastern Illinois,two by pin and two by major decision. In the 125 pound match freshman BryceLeonhardt won his second match of the day with a 12-4 major decision overDexter Wright. Freshman Tyson Shatto at 133 pounds made it two majordecisions in a row for the Cowboys 16-3 victory over Pat Dowty. Junior BlakeGunter recorded his third pin on the season against Mike Stantley, makingthe score 14-0 going into the 149 pound match where freshman Patrick Shulerdefeated Chris Jordan 10-3. In the 157 pound match Andrew Shuler won for thesecond time on Saturday with a 8-2 decision over Andy Coyle. Levi Prevostwon the 165 pound match 5-3 over Matt Veach, the win improves Prevost seasonrecord to 25-4. Eastern Illinois won there only match in the 174 pound boutas Clay French defeated Cowboy Trevor Murray by pin. At 184 pounds freshmanSam Wendland edged Josh Lepper 5-3 for his tenth win of the season. Easternllinois forfeited the 197 pound match adding to the Cowboy lead beforesenior Brad Stelle won his second match of the day this time by pin overPete Ziminski in the heavyweight match making the final score 38-6 in favorof the Cowboys.
"Are guys competed very well today," said UW head wrestling coach StevenSuder following the two duals. "I think most of our guys are wrestling at avery good level going into the Western Regional meet in a couple of weeks.They came out and battled to the last second today and that was hard to dobecause both of these teams are very good. I am proud of the way theycompeted today but tomorrow the battle will be even tougher againstMissouri."
The Pokes face the Missouri Tigers in Columbia tomorrow at 4 p.m.
